OVERCOMING HABITS
The thoughts and
habits fought by many Christians even after being born-again, which in our
godly sense we term ‘carnal doings’ are very real.
Few Christians grow
and leave their old habits to begin such deep journey with Christ and therefore
may not quickly understand the struggles others go through to get past their
old life and truly live their lives for the One they now pledge it for, Jesus
Christ.
Some have read,
prayed, studied and in so many years wonder if living a truly Christian life is
possible. This becomes even mind disturbing when sermons expressing and describing
God's holiness are taught. At this point, frustrated Christians numb their
minds to feel less guilty about the collusion of the word with their lives.
While some listen with a willing heart only to act like they used to.
Anger, envy or
whatever ladens a Christian can be overcome if the following are adhered to:
- Meditation: The
strongest form of changing the heart is done through meditation. A lot of
Christians do not understand this. An hour of deep meditation on the word
of God on specific areas of inconsistencies every day for has tremendous
ability to render our habits powerless and reinforce our minds with new
manners. This is different from studying the Bible. It goes further to
drilling your mind through a conscious thought of the word, thus purging
the subconscious mind. Evil habits dwell in the subconscious mind and
surface when you least expect or feel a sense of victory. It is therefore
important to constantly ponder and meditate on the word of God. Only this
has the strength to fight and overcome thoughts which have dwelt over the
years in the subconscious mind.
- Prayers:
While a lot of Christians will be honest about having prayed against lust,
anger, evil thoughts etc. In addition to the two above, we must keep
praying. Praying here will also include the confession of what we want to
achieve. For instance, ‘I refuse to be annoyed, I'm a Child of God and I
overcome anger’.
- Accountability: While
this truly works, it however would not without honesty. There will be no
need to be accountable to someone who you would not be honest with. Even
if you're breaking from the habit of lying, you must be honest to your
accountability partner who should preferably be a godly trusted friend or
a godly respected elder. You should not be accountable to someone who
talks too much, who will not keep your secrets, nor someone who is
ungodly.
- Avoid habit-prone environments: If you are often defeated by lust, but still go
ahead to see movies with nudity, then you may well be on your way to your
old life. You should not go to parties where others will smoke and drink
when you wish to overcome such habits. You should leave friends who push
you to old habits and walk with Christians who have overcome and want to
overcome such habits.
- Personal Decision: We
must determine to get better. If you talk too much, to reduce it; if you
often insult, to stop; if you often gossip, never to. Whatever habit it
is, to stop and replace with new habits. The best habit to replace any bad
habit with is first the meditation on the word. It can cripple and kill
evil thoughts whilst bringing you to a new phase of total freedom.
However, meditation should be consistent, without which it will not be
effective.

victory in our daily living involves walking in the spirit through prayers and
meditation on his word and maintaining our resolve to consistently obey
God" - Author.
